The Importance of Skin-to-Skin Time for New Fathers

Skin-to-Skin Contact for New Fathers

As a soon-to-be father, I’m learning from experienced parents that the journey is filled with countless joys, and an equal amount of challenges. Something that seems to get a lot less attention, but is super important, is skin-to-skin contact. While the focus on skin-to-skin contact is typically spoken about with the mother, us fathers play a crucial role in bonding with our newborns through touch!

Skin-to-skin contact is just when you place the newborn baby directly on your bare chest. This is usually done within the first hours or days after birth, but really, you can do this whenever you would like. It has been shown recently that skin-to-skin time with dad is super important! There are many benefits that extend beyond the postpartum period.

1. It Promotes Bonding

The first, and probably the most significant benefit, is that skin-to-skin for new fathers helps create a bonding and attachment with the new baby. Just the fact that you’re physically close and intimate helps promote the release of oxytocin (the “love hormone”) in both you AND baby! This hormone plays a huge role in creating a stronger bond between you and the baby, which lays a solid foundation for a nurturing relationship in the years to come. Having this skin-to-skin time creates a deep connection and sense of closeness with your new baby, which just reinforces your role as a protective and loving figure from the beginning.

2. Regulating Baby’s Body Temperature and Heart Rate

Who would have thought, right? Not only does the skin-to-skin contact provide the relationship benefits, but it also helps regulate body temperature and heart rate. There’s something about the warmth from your chest that helps to maintain the baby’s body temperature. Also, the rhythm of your consistent heartbeat provides a familiar and comforting sensation for the baby which somewhat mimics the experience they had in the womb.

3. Increasing Father’s Confidence

Outside of the direct benefits that skin-to-skin contact with dad has, it also has a huge impact on us as fathers. Having this intimate time with your newborn baby creates this level of confidence and competence to care for the newborn baby! Being involved hands-on like this from the earliest moments of the baby’s life helps us gain valuable experience and develop parenting skills that will serve us throughout our parenting journey. This confidence we earn not only increases the bond between us and the baby, but also helps us be more active and engaged in our parenting. It’s a positive for both us and our new baby!

4. Promoting Mental Health and Emotional Well-being

The beginning of fatherhood is going to be a roller coaster. It’s going to be exciting, and equally overwhelming. Probably at the same time. We’ll be feeling a range of emotions that are new to us. Having the skin-to-skin contact with our newborn is a powerful tool that helps benefit our mental and emotional well-being. The release of oxytocin during the contact not only strengthens the father-baby bond, but also helps relieve the stress of everything else. It helps bring us a sense of calmness. This is crucial as we are adjusting to fatherhood and understanding how to help raise a new human being.

5. Helps Stimulate Brain Development

Another benefit of skin-to-skin contact that isn’t commonly mentioned is it’s role in stimulating early brain development, and cognitive function. That close contact helps promote the release of hormones and neurotransmitters. These are essential for neuronal growth and synaptic connectivity in the baby’s developing brain. This neural stimulation lays the groundwork for healthy brain growth and maturation.

6. Strengthening the Father-Infant Bond for Long-term Benefits

With regular skin-to-skin contact with our new babies, it helps to lay the foundation for a strong bond that will extend the entirety of their lives. There’s a lot more to it, but starting to lay a solid foundation with your child from day one can go a long way. Some studies have shown that children who have a secure attachment with their fathers have higher levels of emotional regulation, social skills, and academic achievement through the early stages of their life.

Fathers… Embrace the Power of Skin-to-Skin Contact With Your Babies!

Skin-to-skin contact is more than just holding your baby. There truly is some significance to it, and the benefits are there! These benefits extend beyond just the infant stage.

Momma has a lot of intimate time with baby, it’s important that we get some too! Not only are we developing the habit of spending quality time with our children, but we are aiding in their growth as well!
